Body
This is what
happened
the dead were
settling in under their mud roof
and something was
shuffling overhead
it was a badger
treading on the thin partition
bewildered were the
dead
going about their
days and nights in the dark
putting their feet
down carefully and finding themselves floating
but that badger
still with the
simple heavy box of his body needing to be lifted
was shuffling away
alive
hard at work
with the living
shovel of himself
into the lane he
dropped
not once
looking up
and missed the sight
of his own corpse falling like a suitcase towards him
with the grin like
an opened zip
(as I found
it this morning)
and went on running
with that bindweed will of his
went on running
along the hedge and into the earth again
trembling
as if in a broken
jug for one backwards moment
water
might keep its shape

o que se passou
os
mortos punham-se debaixo dos seus telhados de lama
e
qualquer coisa se arrastava em cima
era
um texugo movendo-se pela estreita fenda
confusos
os mortos, iam
passando
os dias e as noites na mesma escuridão
descendo
os pés com cuidado e flutuando
mas
o tal texugo
ainda
com a simples e pesada caixa do seu corpo a precisar de ser levantada
movia-se
cheio de vida
trabalhando
duramente
com
a pá viva de si mesmo
atirou-se
do alto para a rua
sem
olhar para cima uma única vez
perdeu
assim a imagem do seu próprio cadáver caindo em cima dele como uma
mala
com
o sorriso como um fecho aberto
(tal como constatei esta manhã)
e
saiu a correr na sua vontade de trepadeira
saiu
a correr ao longo da sebe e para dentro da terra novamente
tremendo
como
se numa jarra quebrada, voltando um momento atrás
a
água pudesse conservar a sua forma.
